Forts Galore in Rajasthan

Rajasthan has always been the land of the royals. It has a rich past and a magnificent heritage. Many great dynasties ruled various cities of Rajasthan and left marks of their bravery, valor and grandeur. The forts of Rajasthan are reminders of its great ancient culture and heritage. Each city of Rajasthan has forts and palaces to boast about, be it Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner or Udaipur. Forts were generally built over hilltops, amidst glistening desert sands or inside the wild jungles.

These forts are the magnificent marvels of architecture scattered all over Rajasthan. Interiors of these forts are exquisite while exteriors are rough and tough with a special purpose. Each fort has its own history and tales about the bravery and grandeur of its occupants. Rajasthan is the only land in the world having a galore of forts. Rajasthan is not Rajasthan without its array of forts.

Here is a description of a few important forts of Rajasthan, though it is not a comprehensive list but you will certainly get a glimpse of the grandeur of Rajasthan forts.


This majestic fort is situated about 11 kilometers from Jaipur. It is stunning for its creativity and beautiful blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture. Made up of red sandstone and white marble, the Jaipur Amber Fort Palace presents a picturesque site. Covering the interior walls of the palace are paintings, carvings, precious stones and exquisite mirror settings. Raja Man Singh I in 1592 who belonged to the Kachhawa dynasty began the construction of this fort. Later Sawai Jai Singh completed it.


Jaigarh Fort perched on a hilltop offers picturesque views of Jaipur. It is situated just 15 km from Jaipur and is known as the fort of victory. It was constructed between the 15th and 18th centuries. One can see the stone ramparts of the fort from the city itself. This fort has the largest collection of cannons.


Jaisalmer Fort is also known as the Sonar Kila or Golden Fort as it has been constructed of yellow sandstone and it emits a golden hue when sunrays fall on it. It is a massive complex structure comprised of palaces, various security sources, the havelis of rich merchants, several temples and the residential complexes of the armies and traders.


A high rampart encircles Junagarh Fort in Bikaner. The fort could not be conquered ever. Raja Rai Singh, a general of the Mughal emperor Akbar, constructed it. The Junagarh Fort is a huge complex housing a number of fascinating palaces.

Other popular forts in Rajasthan include Mehrangarh Fort, Nahargarh Fort, Taragarh Fort, Kishangarh Fort and Kumbalgarh Fort.
