Srinagar Tourism Guide

Situated in the lap of Himalayas, at an altitude of 1560 meters, Srinagar is the northernmost state of India. Srinagar is the capital city of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The River Jhelum also flows through a part of the city. The eastern suburbs of the city extent to the shore of the Dal Lake. Spring fed, the 6 km long and 3 km wide lake is divided into four distinct parts by causeways –Gagribal, Lokutdal, Boddal and Nagin. Moored on the banks of the lakes are Srinagar’s unique houseboats – ornately carved, richly furnished, with exotic names. There are number of destinations in Srinagar which are worth visiting.

Shalimar Gardens : Shalimar Gardens were built by the Emperor Jehangir. The gardens spread to the area of 14 km and offers a pleasant place to walk. Tourists can enjoy the light and sound show held in the evening hours every day.The show in English show in English starts at 9 pm. And lasts foe about an hour.

Nishant Bagh : Nishant Bagh is truly a garden of pleasure and fun. It is beautifully located with the mountains as the backdrop. Nishant Garden is the largest Mughal Garden in Srinagar. It was built in the year 1633.

Pari Mahal : Pari Mahal means the Palace of the fairies. It is the favourite location for the film shooting. It has a series of terraces and lovely rose gardens.

Chashma Shahi : Chashma Shahi are the springs in the garden, they are said to hold the medicinal properties. The garden on the split level is a popular picnic spot. Tourists can check out the souvenirs shops outside.

Hazratbal Mosque : A beautiful white building can be easily spotted from a distance. It houses the relic –the hair, it is said of the Prophet Muhammad, which is displayed on the special occasions.

Shankaracharya Hill : Known earlier as Takht-I-Sulaiman, the hill has a temple on the top. The road is motorable up to appoint, after which 200 steps must be climbed to reach the temple. The hilltop provides the magnificent view of the whole Srinagar city.

Shopping in Srinagar : The bazaars of Srinagar are full of colourful crafts, which are spread along the old as well as the new parts of the city. You can get the variety of shawls, phirans, gorgeous carpets, carved walnut, furniture, leather and fur items from here. The Suffering Moses displays the variety of handicrafts. Shopping in Srinagar is a pleasure, though he prices are not high.
