Considering cover for trip cancellations

Considering cover for trip cancellations?

Each year thousands of holidaymakers are caught out when their holiday gets delayed or is cancelled. Unfortunately many holiday insurance packages do not cover delays and cancellations as standard. For this reason, it is wise to check over a travel insurance policy with a fine toothcomb, and to then take out further cancellation cover should you need it.

Acceptable reasons for delay

The reason given for your trip’s delay will effect the kind of compensation that you will receive from your insurance provider. The most common causes of delay are as follows, and are usually covered as standard – but make sure you read your policy’s terms and conditions very carefully so that you know exactly which reasons you can claim for.

Natural disasters – unexpected need for quarantine – unannounced strikes at airports, en route, or in your destination country – hijacking – lost, stolen or damaged travel documents – bad weather – lost, stolen or damaged money – delay caused by a bad traffic accident en route.

Furthermore, anyone seeking to take out curtailment insurance should be aware that typically each policy has a daily maximum amount for reimbursement, which varies from insurer to insurer. Also a minimum length of time by which your trip must have been delayed by in order for you to make a successful claim is usually set down by the insurer – so check your policy so that you know this minimum time limit. You should expect this to be in the region of 8 hours or so.

Trip cancellation

The number of possible causes for holiday cancellation is vast. Some will be covered by an insurance policy as standard, while others will only be covered by more expensive policies.

Inclusive holiday packages are a good option as these tend to offer customers the right to cancel for any reason in exchange for a small ‘cancellation waiver’ fee. This means that should your trip be cancelled, you will get some, if not all, of the cost of your holiday back – read your policy’s terms and conditions to see what size of refund you are entitled to.

Most holiday cancellation insurance policies will cover you in the event of the following:

Accident en route – hijacking – flood or fire at home – natural disasters – illness – injury to one of the travel party – being selected for jury duty.

Most cancellation policies will not cover these reason as standard:

Self-inflicted injuries or illness – change in your financial situation leaving you unable to afford your holiday – contractual obligations – injury or sickness contracted through the use of illegal substances – change in plans.
